At the time, the two market leaders MSN Hotmail and Yahoo! have been providing web-based e-mail services for more than seven years and have been with two and four megabytes of free space or megabytes. The new service had praise and criticism-the latter of Google’s plans to scan, e-mail, to provide targeted advertising on the side of each message to be asked. The case provides an opportunity to discuss competitive interactions in a very complex environment.
