Launched the Siemens factory in Kalwa Mumbai, as Kalwa Works (CW), in 1973 with the production of engines and later diversified to produce designated switchgear and control cabinets. By 2009, 40 percent of all employees in India were Siemens Kalwa working and contributing 45 percent of the total production of Siemens India. Kalwa had become the main business center for Siemens India. In October 2006, Siemens decided to Lean Manufacturing in Kalwa factory as part of a global rollout of Siemens Production System in all its medium-voltage systems implement. The implementations were expected to bring dramatic improvements in labor productivity, lower inventory levels and higher throughput to improve the financial performance of the factories. Promised the lean program, realized that the factory’s current capacity of 4,000 sheets per year by around 50 percent to 6,000 plates per year in the medium term could be increased within two years, and over 12,000 plates within the next four to five years. While the benefits of successful implementation were attractive, the company is including the restructuring of the organization, always staff on board faced numerous challenges, to accept and facilitate the exchange, and any resistance to internal and external stakeholders. This case provides an opportunity to analyze and discuss lean implementation issues for a global multinational company in the Indian context.
