Before you begin to formulate manager marketing strategies for their businesses, they have a deep understanding of the internal and external marketing environments in which they operate. In this sense, we present three methods for the collection and analysis of information about the internal and external marketing environments firms face: 5 C of analysis, Porter’s Five Forces Industry Analysis, and SWOT analysis. These analyzes help students understand the analytical processes by which managers understand themselves, their customers and the markets in which they compete. The note gives students a basis for analyzing marketing cases, as well as providing an analytical structure and procedures for completion of the situation analysis section of a marketing plan.
