In the 1980s, the true impact of 100 years of asbestos mining in South Africa showed how thousands of former miners and those living in mining communities developed asbestos-related diseases (ARD), all fatal. The company responsible, the British Cape plc, in particular-were all multinational companies in other countries. This case is the first of four (A through D, 1350 by UV1353 UV), explains the history of asbestos mining in South Africa, the complicated relationship between the multinational company and one of apartheid and post-apartheid South Africa and the details of battles and problems that many South Africans afflicted ARD bring the multinationals to court and tried to remedy faced.
