Or maybe even since 1895, when Taiwan was part of the Japanese Empire, the “Taiwan issue” is at the heart of politics in East Asia since 1950, when the Americans have interfered in the Chinese Civil War. It is a place of contested an important role in the history of modern China and modern Asia has played. Today, the relations between the People’s Republic of China, are rapidly improving (PRC) in mainland China, and the Republic of China (ROC) on Taiwan. Taiwan investment in the mainland has played an important role in China’s economic boom in recent decades. Investments, partnerships, study, travel, and marriage on the road three times to have a future increasing interaction between two parties, which brought Asia to the brink of war over the last half century (1954, 1958, 1996). But what about the future? Will grow in Taiwan and yet maintain their autonomy as part of the overall economy of “Greater China”? Economic integration will lead, inexorably, to Taiwan’s inclusion in the People’s Republic of China? How could the global economic crisis affect them anything? To gain perspective on modern Taiwan, we first look at its history.
