In October 2002 to the senior investment officers Global Asset UBS AG Management (GAM) division, the largest asset managers in the world to decide whether a new quantitative investment product, one that will stand in sharp contrast to GAM historically fundamentalist spend and value style approach. The problem arises sharp questions about the strategic development of the industry, its products, particularly its leader. To some in the company, it seemed that the new “quantum” product is a natural extension of the strategic transformation of GAM had since 1995. But others in the A-team wondered whether the market would be ready for this product. The tasks for the student are to reflect the changes in the industry, evaluate the transformation of UBS and to assess the fit of the new quantum product with the company’s strategic approach. This case was made to achieve the following objectives teaching: 1) Review the pace, direction and impact of the global asset management industry. The key to this assessment is the emerging research on the relative importance of countries compared to global sectors to explain returns, 2) Explore a “country / industry” organizational structure for global research; cause its defining characteristics. Compare it. Possible with other structures Determine the advantages and disadvantages as an organizing system. Identify the key success factors. And 3) a quantitative evaluation of investment product in comparison to other product offerings.
