Nature plays an important role in maintaining the purity and flow of water. Human activities often reduce the quality and / or quantity of the water for the downstream users, but the conservation of natural ecosystems and the sound conservation management of the residents upstream in watersheds can help a clean, reliable water supply for downstream users water. Water funds are a way for Underwater users to get their water supply by paying for the restoration and conservation of natural ecosystems. They also allow upstream and downstream communities to work together for mutual benefit, the preservation or restoration of the ability of nature to improve water quality and reliable flow measurement and provides economic opportunities for the upstream communities. This case introduces the concept of ecosystem services (the role to play the natural ecosystems in sustaining and fulfilling human life) and payment for ecosystem services (PES), within which to pay the participants in order to maintain or restore the nature’s ability to provide these services. It describes water funds and other PES arrangements, as well as some of the challenges that face water resources. Some examples are provided water funds and other PES programs.
